Wilhelm Friedemann Bach was Johann Sebastian Bach’s eldest son and more closely linked to the spirit of baroque music than were his younger brothers. In our anthology of three keyboard sonatas, two fantasias and a suite, the keyboard composer stands on the threshold of freer forms and harmonies. The Suite in G minor is still informed by the baroque. The two Sonatas in D major, with their galant, capricious idiosyncrasies, demand great attentiveness from the player, while the E flat major Sonata, published in 1748, already anticipates Haydn in the elaboration of its themes. In the Fantasias in a minor and c minor, the liberating powers of the time seem to take hold. The fingerings in the present Urtext edition are by pianist and veteran pedagogue Klaus Schilde, whose name has appeared on numerous G. Henle editions.
Fils aîné de Johann Sebastian Bach, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach était plus attaché à l’esprit de la musique baroque que son frère cadet. Dans la sélection que nous proposons, constituée de trois sonates pour clavier, deux fantaisies et une suite, ce compositeur de musique pour clavier se situe à la charnière de formes et d’harmonies plus libres. La suite en sol mineur est encore entièrement placée sous le signe du baroque. Les deux sonates en Ré majeur, avec leurs irrégularités galantes et capricieuses exigent de l’interprète une grande attention. Cependant, le traitement thématique de la sonate en Mi bémol majeur parue en 1748 préfigure déjà Haydn tandis que les forces libératrices de l’époque semblent à l’œuvre dans les fantaisies en la mineur et ut mineur. Les doigtés de la présente édition Urtext sont de Klaus Schilde, pianiste et pédagogue de longue date, auquel les éditions G. Henle ont déjà fait appel à de nombreuses reprises.

In unserem Auswahlband mit drei Klaviersonaten, zwei Fantasien und einer Suite steht der Klavierkomponist an der Schwelle zu freieren Formen und Harmonien. Die Suite in g-moll steht noch ganz im Zeichen des Barock. Die beiden Sonaten in D-dur mit ihren galanten, kapriziösen Unregelmäßigkeiten erfordern vom Spieler große Aufmerksamkeit. Die 1748 veröffentlichte Es-dur-Sonate weist mit ihrer Themenverarbeitung schon auf Haydn voraus. In den Fantasien in a-moll und c-moll scheinen die befreienden Kräfte der Zeit zu wirken. Die Fingersatzbezeichnungen der vorliegenden Urtextausgabe stammen vom Pianisten und langjährigen Pädagogen Klaus Schilde, der zahlreiche Ausgaben des G. Henle Verlags bezeichnet hat.
