Dvořák had previously written solo music for Hanus Wihan, later the dedicatee of his cello concerto. When he was planning a trio concert tour for 1892 with Wihan and violinist Ferdinand Lachner and needed further works for cello and piano, he reworked “Silent Woods” for cello and piano during the Christmas holidays of 1891. Originally a four-hand piano piece from his cycle “From the Bohemian Forest”, the cantabile character piece became a popular recital item owing to its sonorous cello sound. Dvořák later arranged it as an effective concert piece for violoncello and orchestra. The first edition of 1894 is the basis for editor and Dvořák specialist Milan Pospíšil’s Urtext edition for violoncello and piano.
Dvorák avait déjà écrit de la musique de soliste pour Hanus Wihan, futur dédicataire de son concerto pour violoncelle, avant de projeter avec lui et le violoniste Ferdinand Lachner une tournée en trio prévue pour 1892. Dans cette perspective, ayant besoin de nouvelles œuvres pour violoncelle et piano, il remania «Le Calme de la forêt» dans une version pour violoncelle et piano pendant la période de Noël 1891. Composée initialement pour piano à quatre mains, cette pièce chantante du cycle «De la forêt de Bohème» devint une pièce de concert très populaire grâce aux sonorités du violoncelle. Par la suite, Dvorák réalisa un nouvel arrangement du «Calme de la forêt», le muant en une pièce de concert brillante pour violoncelle et orchestre. Pour l’édition urtext pour violoncelle et piano présentée ici, l’éditeur et spécialiste de Dvorák Milan Pospíšil s’est appuyé principalement sur la première édition de 1894.
Für Hanus Wihan, den späteren Widmungsträger seines Cellokonzerts, hat Dvorák schon früher solistische Musik geschrieben. Als er mit ihm und dem Geiger Ferdinand Lachner für 1892 eine Trio-Tournee plante und weitere Werke für Cello und Klavier brauchte, arbeitete er über die Weihnachtstage 1891 die „Waldesruhe“ für Cello und Klavier um. Ursprünglich ein Klavierstück zu vier Händen aus dem Zyklus „Aus dem Böhmerwalde“, avancierte das kantable Charakterstück durch den sonoren Celloklang zu einem populären Vortragsstück. Später arrangierte Dvorák die „Waldesruhe“ sogar zu einem wirkungsvollen Konzertstück für Violoncello und Orchester. Als Grundlage unserer Urtextausgabe für Violoncello und Klavier dient dem Herausgeber und Dvorák-Spezialisten Milan Pospíšil in erster Linie die Erstausgabe von 1894.
