After a twelve-year interval, Dvorák once again turned his attention to the string quartet in summer 1893. He had been musical director in New York since autumn 1892 and spent the summer in Spillville (Iowa) where a group of Czech immigrants had settled, thus making him feel at home. The beautiful natural surroundings led him to write this unconventional string quartet in the tradition of Beethoven’s “Pastoral” – even down to the imitation of birdcalls. Since the first performances, certain rhythmic and melodic characteristics have been traced back to the influences of the folk music of Native Americans and African Americans, which led to the soon popular work being called the “American Quartet”. For the first time since 1955, the quartet is once again being published in an Urtext edition.
Après une interruption de douze ans, Dvorák se tourna en été 1893 à nouveau vers le genre du quatuor à cordes. Depuis l’automne 1892, il travaillait en tant que directeur musical à New York, passant l’été à Spillville (Iowa) où un groupe d’émigrants tchèques s’était établi, ce qui lui donnait le sentiment de se retrouver dans sa patrie. Les fortes impressions laissées par la nature lui inspirèrent ce quatuor à cordes peu conventionnel dans la tradition de la «Pastorale» de Beethoven – jusqu’à l’imitation des chants d’oiseaux. Dès les premières exécutions on considéra que certaines particularités rythmiques et mélodiques étaient dues aux influences de la musique folklorique des indiens et des afro-américains, ce qui fit valoir à l’œuvre, vite devenue populaire, son surnom de «Quatuor américain». Pour la première fois depuis 1955, le quatuor paraît à nouveau en édition Urtext.
Nach zwölfjähriger Pause wandte sich Dvorák im Sommer 1893 wieder der Gattung des Streichquartetts zu. Seit Herbst 1892 war er als Musikdirektor in New York tätig und verbrachte den Sommer in Spillville (Iowa), wo sich eine Gruppe tschechischer Auswanderer angesiedelt hatte und ihm das Gefühl von Heimat vermittelte. Die starken Natureindrücke führten zu diesem unkonventionellen Streichquartett in der Nachfolge von Beethovens „Pastorale“ – bis hin zur Nachahmung von Vogelrufen. Bestimmte rhythmische und melodische Eigentümlichkeiten wurden seit den ersten Aufführungen auf Einflüsse der Volksmusik von Indianern und Afroamerikanern zurückgeführt und brachten dem schnell populär gewordenen Werk den Beinamen „Amerikanisches Quartett“ ein. Erstmals seit 1955 erscheint das Quartett nun wieder in einer Urtextausgabe.
